Swap-Free Accounts: What Replaces the Swap, and What It Costs You
A swap-free account drops the overnight interest charge, but the broker still has to make that money back somewhere.
Updated Oct 2026 · how we rate brokers
The swap is interest on money you borrowed to hold a position
When you hold a leveraged position past the daily rollover, you are effectively borrowing part of the position size. The swap is the interest on that borrowing, credited or debited depending on direction and on the rate differential between the two currencies.
A swap-free account removes that interest charge. That is the whole mechanic. It is not a discount on trading, and it does not change your spread, your execution, or your risk.
Whether you need one depends on your own convictions and circumstances. If the overnight interest is the thing you object to, this is the product that addresses it. Nothing else about the trade changes.

Something always replaces the swap, and you should find out what
No broker works for free. If the overnight charge is gone, the revenue has to come from somewhere else. Common replacements are a wider spread on the affected pairs, a flat administration charge on positions held past rollover, or a cap on how long a swap-free position can stay open before it is closed or converted.
None of those is automatically bad. What is bad is not knowing which one applies to you. A wider spread hits you on every trade, including the ones you close in an hour. An admin charge hits only the positions you hold overnight. Those are very different costs for very different trading styles.
Ask the broker directly which replacement applies, and ask for it in writing on the account page rather than in a chat reply. If the answer is vague, treat that as the answer.

An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. Between this rate and the broker's conversion there is a margin, and it comes out of the trade.
The Islamic label is a claim, not a certificate
A broker calling an account Islamic or swap-free is making a marketing statement. Some accounts are reviewed by a sharia advisory board and some are simply the standard account with the overnight charge switched off. The two are not the same product.
If the religious character of the account matters to you, ask who reviewed it and what the review covers. A published fatwa or advisory opinion is a document you can read. A badge on a website is not.
Your own scholar's view on leveraged forex comes first regardless of what the account is called. No broker can settle that question for you.

Brokers usually also ask for BVN, proof of address; requirements differ per firm. Look at the opening page of the broker you chose: that is the list that applies to you.
Check the firm against the SEC Nigeria register before you fund anything
The Securities and Exchange Commission of Nigeria publishes a register of capital market operators at sec.gov.ng. Search the firm's name there yourself, on the regulator's site, rather than trusting a logo on the broker's homepage.
The register is the only answer that counts on the question of local standing. Read what it actually says about the entity you are dealing with, and note the exact legal name, because trading names and operating companies often differ.
Funding is by bank transfer, and the other rails Nigerian traders use are OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card and USSD transfer. Those rails move money quickly and are hard to reverse. That is a reason to check the register before you send, not after.
Session timing matters for overnight charges too. Sydney runs 22:00 to 07:00 WAT, Tokyo 01:00 to 10:00 WAT, London 09:00 to 18:00 WAT and New York 13:00 to 22:00 WAT, with the London and New York overlap from 13:00 to 18:00 WAT. If you trade the overlap and close before rollover, the swap question may never touch you.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search the legal entity from the broker's own footer, not the brand.
What the broker does with your open position when the swap is removed
On a swap-free account the broker still has to finance the position you are holding overnight. Instead of charging you a daily interest figure, it may widen the price at which it will close your trade, or apply a fixed charge at entry. The label on the statement changes; the money leaving your account does not.
That matters because the replacement is often invisible until you compare two accounts side by side. A spread that looks identical on the quote screen can behave differently once the position is held past the daily cut-off. Ask the broker, in writing, what happens to an open position at rollover on the swap-free product.
The practical consequence is that a strategy built on holding for days or weeks can cost more on a swap-free account than on a standard one, even though the word interest never appears. Before funding, request the swap-free schedule and the standard schedule and read both against the same trade size.
| Platform | What it is | Who makes it |
|---|---|---|
| MetaTrader 4 | The older standard; expert advisors and a large script ecosystem | MetaQuotes |
| MetaTrader 5 | The newer build; more order types and timeframes | MetaQuotes |
| cTrader | Depth of market and a different order model | Spotware |
| The broker's own app | Usually simpler, and tied to that one firm | The broker |
A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. An app store listing says nothing about a licence; the register does.
The daily cut-off time is where swap-free accounts surprise Nigerian traders
Rollover happens at a fixed server time, and Nigeria sits at UTC+1, so the cut-off usually lands in the evening or late night local time. A position opened minutes before that moment can attract the replacement charge for a full day, while one opened minutes after may not. The timing is published by the broker, not by any regulator.
Traders who scalp around the cut-off often assume swap-free means charge-free for short holds. That assumption fails when the replacement is a wider spread applied at entry, because the cost is already inside the price before the trade is placed. There is no line item to check afterwards.
Read the broker's contract specifications page for the rollover time and the triple-charge day, then convert it to WAT yourself. If the broker will not state the time plainly, treat that as a reason to keep looking rather than a detail to resolve later.
Before you send money
- A fixed monthly return, promised in advance
- Ask which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators.
- A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchers
- Check the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers.
- Someone offering to trade the account for you
- Managing money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it.
- A withdrawal released only after a new payment
- Read the withdrawal terms you agreed to. A fee invented at payout time is not in them.
None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at sec.gov.ng.
Swap-free status is usually granted per account, not per person
A common error is assuming that once a broker offers an Islamic account, every account held by that client is swap-free. In practice the status attaches to the specific account type you opened, and a second standard account under the same name will still carry the overnight interest charge. The distinction is administrative, not personal.
This matters for Nigerian traders who run more than one account, for example a long-term account and a separate one for short-term trades. Mixing them up means paying the charge you thought you had avoided, and discovering it only when the statement arrives. Confirm which account number carries the status and keep that in writing.
Some brokers also require a periodic declaration or a request to keep the status active. If the request lapses, the account can quietly revert. Diarise the renewal and check the account type shown on your platform before each funding.

Funding a swap-free account from a Nigerian bank raises its own questions
Bank transfer is the main rail, with OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card and USSD transfer also in use. Each route leaves a different trail, and a swap-free account does not change how the deposit is treated. What changes is that the broker may ask for additional documentation to support the religious basis of the account.
The failure mode is a deposit sent from an account in someone else's name, which many brokers refuse and return, often after a delay and sometimes minus a handling charge. Send from an account in your own name, and keep the transfer reference. The broker's own funding page states the accepted methods and any name-matching rule.
Where the money is routed through a payment provider rather than directly to the broker, the provider's terms apply first. Check the provider's limits and confirmation times inside its own app before you send, and treat the broker's credited balance, not the debit alert, as the figure that counts.
| Rail | What it is | Who sets the limit and the fee |
|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer · used most | Bank transfer | Your bank and the broker |
| OPay | Payment service | The provider and the broker |
| PalmPay | Payment service | The provider and the broker |
| Moniepoint | Payment service | The provider and the broker |
| Card | Card payment | Your card issuer and the broker |
| USSD transfer | Bank channel | Your bank and the broker |
Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Fees are stated in two places - your provider's app and the broker's funding page - and the payout belongs on the account that paid in.
A swap-free account does not change what the SEC Nigeria register tells you
The register at sec.gov.ng lists capital market operators, and it is the first place to look before sending money. It does not certify that a firm's swap-free product is genuinely free of interest-like charges, and it does not endorse the product. It tells you whether the entity appears on the public list at all.
Do not treat a swap-free label as evidence of regulatory standing, and do not treat regulatory standing as evidence that the replacement charges are fair. These are two separate checks, done in that order. A firm can appear on the register and still price its swap-free account in a way that costs you more than the standard one.
Search the register yourself rather than relying on a screenshot or a link sent by a sales agent. If the name on the register does not match the name on the funding page, stop and resolve the mismatch before any transfer leaves your bank.
Is forex trading halal or haram?
That is a religious question, and it is settled by scholars, not by brokers or by this page. The part that concerns a trading account is the overnight interest, which is what a swap-free account removes. Leverage, speculation and the underlying currency exchange are separate questions you should put to someone qualified to answer them.
Does a swap-free account cost more to trade?
It can. The overnight charge is usually replaced by a wider spread, a flat administration charge on held positions, or a limit on how long a position can stay open. Which one applies depends on the broker and the account. Check the broker's own funding and account terms page for the figures rather than assuming the account is cheaper.
How do I check a broker's status in Nigeria?
Go to sec.gov.ng and search the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators for the firm's exact legal name. Read the entry yourself instead of relying on a badge or a claim on the broker's site. If the name you find does not match the entity you are funding, stop and ask why before sending anything.
