How This Forex Guide Is Researched, Sourced and Updated
Every claim here is checked against the source named in the text, and anything that cannot be verified is left out.
Updated Oct 2026 · how we rate brokers
Nothing here is written from memory or from a broker's marketing page
Every claim in this guide is checked against the source named in the text, and anything that cannot be verified is left out. Where a figure would be needed, the text tells you where to look it up instead of inventing one. That is deliberate: a made-up spread or minimum deposit contradicts the table beside it the moment a reader opens the broker's funding page.
Broker terms change without notice. A spread quoted in a review written months ago is a historical artefact, not a fact about today. So this guide avoids quoting them and points you at the live page instead.
| Rail | What it is | Who sets the limit and the fee |
|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer · used most | Bank transfer | Your bank and the broker |
| OPay | Payment service | The provider and the broker |
| PalmPay | Payment service | The provider and the broker |
| Moniepoint | Payment service | The provider and the broker |
| Card | Card payment | Your card issuer and the broker |
| USSD transfer | Bank channel | Your bank and the broker |
Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Fees are stated in two places - your provider's app and the broker's funding page - and the payout belongs on the account that paid in.
The regulator question is answered by the SEC Nigeria register, not by this page
Nigeria's capital markets regulator is the Securities and Exchange Commission, known as SEC Nigeria. Its public list is the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators at sec.gov.ng. That register, not this page, is the authority on who appears on it.
Whether online forex dealing can be licensed locally in Nigeria is not something this guide has confirmed, so it takes no position on it. You will not find a claim here that a firm is licensed, safe or best, and you will not find a claim that firms are unlicensed either. Open the register at sec.gov.ng and search the name yourself before you send anyone money.
If a company's name does not appear, that is information you now hold. What you do with it is your decision, but make it with the register open in front of you, not with a sales page open in front of you.
| Field | What it says |

| Register | SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators |

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search the legal entity from the broker's own footer, not the brand.
Times and payment rails are stated in WAT because that is your clock
Session hours in this guide are given in West Africa Time (WAT, UTC+1), not in New York or London time. Sydney runs 22:00 to 07:00 WAT, Tokyo 01:00 to 10:00 WAT, London 09:00 to 18:00 WAT, and New York 13:00 to 22:00 WAT. The London and New York overlap falls at 13:00 to 18:00 WAT.
Funding is treated the same way. Bank transfer is the main rail, with OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card and USSD transfer also in use. This guide does not quote fees, limits or minimum deposits for any of them, because those sit on the broker's funding page and in your bank transfer app. Check both before you commit money.
| Figure | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|
| Licensee names and status | SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators — sec.gov.ng | 2026-10-10 |
| Session windows | Fixed UTC windows; London and New York shift in their DST | On change |
| USD/NGN | open.er-api.com | 2026-09-28 |
| Funding limits and fees | Set by the provider and the broker — not published here | Changes without notice |
We would rather show a gap than a number we cannot stand behind, so untraceable figures are simply not printed.
What gets updated, and what you should re-check before acting
Session times shift when a major market changes its clocks, so those are the entries most likely to be revised. Regulatory references are checked against sec.gov.ng rather than against a cached copy. Anything that cannot be re-verified gets removed rather than softened.
Treat every page here as a starting point and the primary source as the truth. Before you deposit, confirm the firm's status on the SEC Nigeria register, confirm the current funding terms on the broker's own page, and confirm the fee your bank or wallet will charge. If this guide and the primary source disagree, the primary source wins.
No page here promises profit, and none should be read as advice to trade. Forex dealing carries risk of loss, and the only honest position on returns is that they are not knowable in advance.
| Page | The question it answers | What the answer rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Market hours | When is the market open on my clock? | Fixed session windows, converted to WAT |
| Position calculator | How large a position does my stop allow? | Arithmetic in the page, from your own inputs |
| How to start | What is the order of the steps? | Licence first, then funding, then size |
| What forex is | What am I actually trading? | Definitions, with no figures attached |
| Apps and platforms | Which platform will I be using? | What each terminal is and who writes it |
Nothing here ranks brokers or recommends one. No page is published unless it answers a question.
A register entry confirms the firm, not the product you are being sold
A firm can appear on the SEC Nigeria register and still offer a leveraged product that is unsuitable for you. The register answers a narrow question about the entity, not about the specific contract, account type or promotion you were shown. Treat it as a starting filter, not a verdict.
The practical consequence is that two checks are needed, not one. First confirm the entity on sec.gov.ng, then read the broker's own funding and product documentation to see what you would actually be signing up to. If the second check is vague or missing, that is your answer.
Readers often flip the order and search for reassurance after depositing. Do the register check before any transfer leaves your bank app, because recovering money sent by bank transfer in Nigeria is slow and sometimes impossible.
| Figure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Indicative USD/NGN | 1 327.30 | open.er-api.com, pulled 2026-09-28 |
| How often it moves | Every trading day | — |
| The rate your account uses | Your broker's own conversion | The broker's rate card |
| Symbol on this site | ₦ | — |
An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. Between this rate and the broker's conversion there is a margin, and it comes out of the trade.
Bank transfer is the default rail, and that changes your recovery options
Most Nigerian readers will fund an account by bank transfer, with OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card and USSD transfer as alternatives. Each rail has its own dispute process and its own evidence trail. The rail you choose shapes what you can prove later.
A transfer initiated from your own banking app is authorised by you. That single fact weakens many later complaints. A card payment may carry chargeback rights, while a transfer usually does not, so the two are not interchangeable when something goes wrong.
Keep the confirmation message, the recipient account name and the timestamp. WAT timestamps matter because support desks abroad may record your complaint in another timezone, and mismatched times make a simple query drag on.
| Document | What it proves |
|---|---|
| NIN slip or passport | Who you are |
| Selfie with the ID document | That the document is in your hands |
Brokers usually also ask for BVN, proof of address; requirements differ per firm. Look at the opening page of the broker you chose: that is the list that applies to you.
Marketing that quotes returns is a reason to slow down, not a reason to trust
Forex marketing aimed at Nigerian readers often leads with income figures, screenshots or a lifestyle. None of that is verifiable, and none of it is regulated as a factual claim. A firm's willingness to publish such material tells you something about its standards.
This guide does not repeat those figures because doing so would launder them into something that looks checked. Where a number genuinely matters, such as a fee or a minimum, it is published on the broker's own funding page and can change without notice.
The failure mode is anchoring. Once a reader has seen a large figure, a smaller honest expectation feels like a disappointment, and that discomfort is exactly what pushes people into larger deposits than they planned.
| Platform | What it is | Who makes it |
|---|---|---|
| MetaTrader 4 | The older standard; expert advisors and a large script ecosystem | MetaQuotes |
| MetaTrader 5 | The newer build; more order types and timeframes | MetaQuotes |
| cTrader | Depth of market and a different order model | Spotware |
| The broker's own app | Usually simpler, and tied to that one firm | The broker |
A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. An app store listing says nothing about a licence; the register does.
Third party reviews and forum posts are leads, not sources
A forum thread or video review can point you towards a firm worth checking. It cannot confirm registration, and it cannot confirm that the firm will still be operating when you want your money back. Use it to generate a name, then verify that name independently.
Reviews are also easy to manufacture and hard to date. A positive post from years ago may describe a firm under different ownership, a different licence status or a different payment process. Nothing in it is a substitute for the current register entry.
Where a review and the register disagree, the register wins. Where the register is silent, treat the firm as unverified regardless of how many people online say otherwise.
Before you send money
- A fixed monthly return, promised in advance
- Ask which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators.
- A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchers
- Check the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers.
- Someone offering to trade the account for you
- Managing money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it.
- A withdrawal released only after a new payment
- Read the withdrawal terms you agreed to. A fee invented at payout time is not in them.
None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at sec.gov.ng.
What to do when this page and a broker's page contradict each other
Contradictions are normal and they are not a scandal. This page describes general practice and points to official sources, while a broker's page describes that firm's current terms. When the two differ on anything specific, the broker's own documentation is the one that governs your account.
The order of operations is simple. Check the entity on sec.gov.ng, read the broker's funding page for the rail you intend to use, then confirm the deposit details inside the app or site before sending anything. Screenshots of each step cost nothing.
If a support agent tells you something that contradicts the published page, ask for it in writing through the official channel. Verbal assurances from a chat window are not evidence, and in a dispute they carry almost no weight.
When the market is worth sitting down for (WAT)
- Busiest window
- 13:00-18:00 WAT — London and New York open together
- Thinnest stretch
- 22:00-07:00 WAT — Sydney alone, wider spreads
- European open
- 09:00-18:00 WAT
- US open
- 13:00-22:00 WAT
- Closed
- Friday New York close until the Sydney open on Monday
The clocks in force today are shown as follows: GMT applies in London until 28 March, while EDT applies in New York until 1 November. Nigeria does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.
Where do I check whether a forex firm is registered in Nigeria?
Go to sec.gov.ng and use the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators. Search the exact company name and read what the register says. This guide does not make that determination for you.
Why does this guide avoid quoting spreads, fees and minimum deposits?
Because those numbers change and a stale figure misleads. They belong on the broker's funding page and in your bank transfer app, where you can see the current terms for your own account.
What time are the main forex sessions in Nigeria?
In WAT, Sydney runs 22:00 to 07:00, Tokyo 01:00 to 10:00, London 09:00 to 18:00 and New York 13:00 to 22:00. The London and New York overlap is 13:00 to 18:00 WAT, which is the busiest stretch of the Nigerian day.
