How to Start Forex Trading in Nigeria: First Account, in the Right Order
Open your first forex account by checking the SEC Nigeria register, choosing a payment rail, and funding only what you can afford to lose.
Updated Oct 2026 · how we rate brokers
Search the broker's legal entity on the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators before you compare spreads.
Brokers verify this before the first withdrawal, not at signup.

Small first deposit, and withdraw to the same account you paid from.
At the size you intend to use for real — otherwise it teaches nothing.
Brokers usually also ask for BVN, proof of address. Requirements differ per broker — the account-opening page lists what that firm accepts.
Open your first account only after you have checked the register
Open your first forex account by checking the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators at sec.gov.ng, then choosing a broker and funding method that suits how you actually move money in Nigeria.
That order matters. Most beginners in Nigeria start with a broker someone recommended, then look for reasons to trust it. Reverse it. The register is public, it is the regulator's own list, and it takes minutes to search. If a name is not there, you have your answer before any money moves.
Do not treat a broker's own website as proof of anything. Marketing pages are written to sell, not to inform. The register at sec.gov.ng is the only source on this page that can settle the question of who is on it.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search the legal entity from the broker's own footer, not the brand.
Fund with the rail you already use, and keep the first deposit small
Nigerian traders mostly fund accounts by bank transfer. OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card and USSD transfer also appear on many funding pages, but bank transfer is the default for a reason: it leaves a clear record and it is the rail most people already trust.
Before you send anything, open the broker's funding page and read what it says about deposits, withdrawals, processing times and any charges. Do not rely on a video, a Telegram group or a friend's summary. The funding page is the document that governs your money.
Keep the first deposit small enough that losing all of it would annoy you but not change your month. That is not a strategy, it is a test of the withdrawal process. A broker that is easy to pay and slow to pay out is telling you something.
| Rail | What it is | Who sets the limit and the fee |
|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer · used most | Bank transfer | Your bank and the broker |
| OPay | Payment service | The provider and the broker |
| PalmPay | Payment service | The provider and the broker |
| Moniepoint | Payment service | The provider and the broker |
| Card | Card payment | Your card issuer and the broker |
| USSD transfer | Bank channel | Your bank and the broker |
Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Fees are stated in two places - your provider's app and the broker's funding page - and the payout belongs on the account that paid in.
Learn on a demo, then trade the sessions that fit Nigerian time
Use a demo account until placing an order, setting a stop and closing a position feel boring. Boredom is the goal. If clicking buy still feels exciting, you are not ready to use real money.
Forex sessions run in WAT, which is UTC+1. Sydney is 22:00 to 07:00, Tokyo 01:00 to 10:00, London 09:00 to 18:00, and New York 13:00 to 22:00. The London and New York overlap, 13:00 to 18:00 WAT, is when the most pairs tend to move.
That overlap sits in the Nigerian afternoon and early evening, which is convenient if you have a day job. Trading the quiet hours before dawn is possible, but thin markets punish beginners. Pick a session you can watch properly, not one you have to squint at.
When the market is worth sitting down for (WAT)
- Busiest window
- 13:00-18:00 WAT — London and New York open together
- Thinnest stretch
- 22:00-07:00 WAT — Sydney alone, wider spreads
- European open
- 09:00-18:00 WAT
- US open
- 13:00-22:00 WAT
- Closed
- Friday New York close until the Sydney open on Monday
The clocks in force today are shown as follows: GMT applies in London until 28 March, while EDT applies in New York until 1 November. Nigeria does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.
Skip the shortcuts, the PDFs and the crypto detour
Searches for a forex trading for beginners PDF usually end with a downloaded file that promises a system. Treat any document that promises easy income as advertising. There is no PDF that removes the years of screen time this takes.
Crypto trading for beginners is a separate market with separate risks. Do not assume that skills or habits from one carry over cleanly to the other, and do not let a crypto loss push you into forex to recover it.
If you trade on your phone, use the broker's own app and check the register before you install anything. Phone trading is fine, but small screens encourage impulsive taps. Set your stop before you look at the chart again.

We would rather show a gap than a number we cannot stand behind, so untraceable figures are simply not printed.
The register check is a starting filter, not a one-off formality
A name appearing on the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators is a starting filter, not a permanent status. Entries change. A firm can be added, suspended or removed after the page you read was written, so the check has a shelf life. Treat it as dated evidence, not a certificate you file away.
The practical consequence is timing. Do the check on the day you intend to send money, not the week you first heard the name. Open sec.gov.ng in the same sitting as the transfer, compare the exact entity name on the register against the name on the receiving account, and stop if the two do not match word for word.
This catches the most common failure mode: a local agent or affiliate marketing a platform under a name that is close to, but not the same as, a registered entity. Similar spelling is not the same entity. If the match is imperfect, do not proceed on reassurance. Go back to the register and start again.
| Figure | Value | Source |

| How often it moves | Every trading day | — |
| The rate your account uses | Your broker's own conversion | The broker's rate card |
| Symbol on this site | ₦ | — |
An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. Between this rate and the broker's conversion there is a margin, and it comes out of the trade.
Set the funding rail before you choose the platform, not after
Most beginners pick a platform first and then discover how they are expected to move money into it. That order causes trouble. Decide your rail first: bank transfer, OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card or USSD transfer. The rail you already use daily is easier to track, reverse and explain to your bank if something goes wrong.
Bank transfer is the main rail in Nigeria, and it leaves a record you can point to. Wallets and cards are convenient but add a layer between you and the platform, which matters when a deposit is delayed or attributed to the wrong account. Fewer layers means fewer places for a payment to stall.
Before sending anything, read the broker's own funding page for the exact steps, the receiving account name and the reference format required. Do not rely on a chat message, a forwarded screenshot or a group post for account details. The platform's published funding page is the only source worth following.
| Document | What it proves |
|---|---|
| NIN slip or passport | Who you are |
| Selfie with the ID document | That the document is in your hands |
Brokers usually also ask for BVN, proof of address; requirements differ per firm. Look at the opening page of the broker you chose: that is the list that applies to you.
Your first deposit is a test of the withdrawal path, not a bet
The purpose of a small first deposit is to prove the whole loop works: money in, position opened, position closed, money back to your Nigerian bank account. Many people test only the first half. They fund, trade, and never confirm that a withdrawal arrives cleanly in their own name.
Withdrawal is where identity mismatches surface. If the trading account name and the bank account name differ, or if funds were sent from a wallet registered to someone else, the payout can be held. Confirm the account is in your own name before funding, and use the same rail for the withdrawal test that you used to deposit.
Keep the first deposit small enough that losing it would be annoying rather than damaging. That is not a prediction about the market. It is a limit on what a broken process can cost you while you are still learning how the platform, the rail and your bank behave together.
| Platform | What it is | Who makes it |
|---|---|---|
| MetaTrader 4 | The older standard; expert advisors and a large script ecosystem | MetaQuotes |
| MetaTrader 5 | The newer build; more order types and timeframes | MetaQuotes |
| cTrader | Depth of market and a different order model | Spotware |
| The broker's own app | Usually simpler, and tied to that one firm | The broker |
A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. An app store listing says nothing about a licence; the register does.
Keep your trading records where your bank can see them
Forex activity in Nigeria touches the banking system, so a clean paper trail protects you later. Save the deposit confirmation, the platform statement and the withdrawal record for every movement. Screenshots of a trading app are weaker evidence than a bank statement showing the matching transfer.
This matters most when a payment is queried. Banks and platforms ask for the reference, the date and the receiving account name. If your only record is a chat thread or a deleted notification, you cannot answer. Store records somewhere that survives a lost phone, not only in the app that generated them.
Do not mix personal and trading money in one account if you can avoid it. A separate account makes your trading activity legible to you and to anyone who has to review it. The point is not paperwork for its own sake. It is being able to prove what happened when the amounts involved are questioned.
Before you send money
- A fixed monthly return, promised in advance
- Ask which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators.
- A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchers
- Check the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers.
- Someone offering to trade the account for you
- Managing money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it.
- A withdrawal released only after a new payment
- Read the withdrawal terms you agreed to. A fee invented at payout time is not in them.
None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at sec.gov.ng.
Do I need a lot of money to start forex trading in Nigeria?
No specific amount is required by anything on this page, and you should be suspicious of anyone who names one. The sensible rule is to fund only what you can lose without affecting rent, food or transport. Check the broker's funding page for its own minimum, because that figure changes and is not something this guide can confirm for you.
Can I trade forex on my phone in Nigeria?
Yes. Most brokers offer a mobile app or a mobile-friendly platform, and Nigerian payment rails such as bank transfer, OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card and USSD transfer are commonly supported. The constraint is not the phone, it is the small screen and the temptation to trade too often. Set your stop before you start tapping.
Which session is best for a beginner in Nigeria?
The London and New York overlap, 13:00 to 18:00 WAT, is the busiest window and fits the Nigerian afternoon. London alone runs 09:00 to 18:00 WAT, and New York runs 13:00 to 22:00 WAT. Trade when you can actually watch the market, not when a forum says the pips are biggest.
One check before you fund.
The SEC Nigeria register is the only list that matters. Here is how to read it.
