Forex session hours in Nigeria time, and which window is actually worth trading

London runs 09:00 to 18:00 WAT and New York 13:00 to 22:00 WAT, so the overlap from 13:00 to 18:00 is your realistic window.

13:00-18:00 WAT — London / New York overlap, the most liquid hours of the day.

The clocks in force today are shown as follows: GMT applies in London until 28 March, while EDT applies in New York until 1 November. Nigeria does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.

The four sessions, converted to West Africa Time

Nigeria runs on WAT, UTC+1, and never changes its clocks - but the sessions do, because London, New York and Sydney change theirs. Sydney trades from 22:00 to 07:00 WAT, Tokyo from 01:00 to 10:00 WAT, London from 09:00 to 18:00 WAT, and New York from 13:00 to 22:00 WAT. Those are the only four numbers you need.

Notice how much of the clock is dead for a Nigerian trader. Tokyo opens at 01:00, which means a 01:00 alarm if you want the Asian open. New York closes at 22:00, which is late but survivable. London is the one session that sits inside a normal Nigerian working day.

The sessions overlap, and that matters more than any single one. The London and New York overlap runs 13:00 to 18:00 WAT. It is the busiest four hours of the forex day, and for most people reading this in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt, it is also the most convenient.

London is the session that fits a Nigerian day

London opens at 09:00 WAT, which is when most Nigerian offices are starting. If you trade before work, you are looking at the first hour or two of London, not the whole session. That is a real constraint, not a marketing problem.

The London session carries the heaviest currency turnover of the day, and the first hours after the open often set the tone. But heavy turnover is not the same as easy money. It means wider swings in both directions, and a stop placed casually will be found.

If you can only trade one window, London is the sensible default for a Nigerian schedule. It overlaps your morning, it ends at 18:00, and it does not require you to be awake at 02:00.

New York and the 13:00 to 18:00 overlap

New York runs 13:00 to 22:00 WAT. On its own it is a long session, and the later hours thin out as European desks close. The part worth your attention is the front: 13:00 to 18:00 WAT, when London is still open.

That overlap is when US economic releases land and when both major centres are staffed. Moves can be sharp and fast. Sharp and fast cuts both ways, and it is the window where over-leveraged accounts tend to die.

If your day job runs until 17:00, you can still catch the last hour of the overlap. Whether that hour suits your strategy is a question only your own testing can answer. Do not let anyone tell you a session guarantees an outcome.

The Asian session and the hours you should probably skip

Tokyo runs 01:00 to 10:00 WAT and Sydney 22:00 to 07:00 WAT. For a Nigerian trader, these are night hours. Ranges are often narrower, and some pairs barely move until London arrives.

Narrow ranges tempt people into tight stops and frequent trades, which is how costs quietly eat an account. If you trade the Asian session, do it because your strategy was built and tested for it, not because you cannot sleep.

Whatever window you pick, confirm the practical side before committing money. Check any firm against the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators at sec.gov.ng, and read the broker's own funding page for how deposits and withdrawals actually work. Bank transfer is the main rail here, with OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card and USSD transfer also in use, and the fees and timelines sit in those apps, not in a guide.

Brokers usually also ask for BVN, proof of address; requirements differ per firm. Look at the opening page of the broker you chose: that is the list that applies to you.

The session clock is not the same as your broker's server clock

A chart printed in your platform may show candle opens that do not match West Africa Time. Many brokers stamp prices on their own server time, often a United States or European offset. So a range you marked as London's open on your phone can sit one or two hours away from the same range on the platform.

The practical consequence is that a strategy tested on one broker's clock can look profitable and then fail on another broker's chart, without any change in the market itself. Before trusting any session-based rule, check the time zone shown in the platform settings and compare a known candle open against WAT.

Write the offset down and keep it next to your session notes. If the platform lets you change the displayed time zone, set it to WAT and leave it there. That removes one silent source of error before you risk money on a session idea.

MetaTrader 5The newer build; more order types and timeframesMetaQuotes
cTraderDepth of market and a different order modelSpotware

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. An app store listing says nothing about a licence; the register does.

Session edges are thin in the minutes around the open

The first minutes of London and New York often carry the widest price swings of the day. That is not a gift. It is the point where pending orders, stop losses and thin books meet, and fills can land far from the price you clicked. Nigerian traders on a bank transfer funded account feel this through slippage, not through a fee line.

A common failure mode is to treat the open as a reliable entry because it is busy. Busy is not the same as fair. Spreads widen, requotes appear, and a stop placed close to entry can be taken out by noise before the real move starts.

If you trade the open at all, decide your maximum acceptable slippage in advance and use orders that state a price. If the fill is worse than that, let it go. There is another session tomorrow, and the market does not owe you that specific candle.

Before you send money

A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchers
Check the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers.

Managing money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it.
A withdrawal released only after a new payment
Read the withdrawal terms you agreed to. A fee invented at payout time is not in them.

None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at sec.gov.ng.

Funding an account at night changes which session you can actually trade

Bank transfers in Nigeria do not run on the forex clock. A transfer started late in the evening may not reflect until the next working day, and the same applies to OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, card and USSD routes. So the session you plan to trade and the session you can fund are two different schedules.

The consequence is a familiar one. A trader sees the New York window approaching, tries to top up, and the balance arrives after the move has gone. Chasing it the next morning means trading a session that does not suit the plan, or not trading at all.

Fund during Nigerian banking hours, before the session you intend to use, and check the broker's own funding page for that method's processing window. Do not assume instant. Treat the funding step as part of the trade plan, not an afterthought.

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Fees are stated in two places - your provider's app and the broker's funding page - and the payout belongs on the account that paid in.

Check who is actually on the other side before you deposit

Session timing tells you when the market is liquid. It says nothing about whether the firm holding your money is registered to operate in Nigeria. Those are separate questions, and mixing them up is how people end up unable to withdraw after a good week.

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Nigeria publishes a register of capital market operators at sec.gov.ng. Use it. Search the exact entity name that appears on the account agreement, not the brand on the advert. If the name is absent, that is information, and it is information you want before a transfer, not after.

Nothing here says any particular broker is safe or suitable. The register is a starting point, not a guarantee, and a licence does not remove market risk. It only tells you whether the firm is accountable to a Nigerian regulator.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Search the legal entity from the broker's own footer, not the brand.

What time is the London forex session in Nigeria?

London runs from 09:00 to 18:00 WAT. Nigeria is UTC+1 all year, so the change is not on your side of the clock - it is on London's, and British Summer Time moves this window by an hour twice a year.

What time is the New York forex session in Nigeria?

New York runs from 13:00 to 22:00 WAT. The London and New York overlap is 13:00 to 18:00 WAT, which is usually the busiest stretch of the day.

Which session should a Nigerian trader focus on?

Most people here find London, or the London and New York overlap, easiest to fit around a normal day. That is a scheduling point, not a promise of profit. Test your own strategy in the window you can actually watch consistently, and verify any firm on the SEC Nigeria register at sec.gov.ng before sending money.

Margin trading in forex and CFDs can cost you more than you put in. Most retail accounts end up losing. Nothing here is advice.
